Morocco is a world leader in the fight against climate change, Samantha Power, Administrator of the United States Agency for International Development (USAID), said on Monday in Benguerir.

The Kingdom has taken important steps towards achieving its goal of reducing greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions by 45.5% by 2030, explained Power, on the sidelines of the signing ceremony of a memorandum of understanding between USAID, the “GiveDirectly” organization and Mohammed VI Polytechnic University, with the support of OCP, for the launch of the Cooperative Resilience Program, a new initiative aimed at supporting adaptation efforts to cope with the impacts of the climate change in Morocco.

Power also expressed USAID’s determination, on behalf of the American people and government, to support Morocco’s efforts to address climate and development challenges, emphasizing the role and contribution of women and young people in spearheading the Kingdom’s efforts to further strengthen its leadership, not only in reducing GHG emissions, but also in helping communities meet the challenges of climate change.

For her part, GiveDirectly’s Vice President of Partnerships, Yolande Wright, welcomed the Kingdom’s leadership and achievements in this area, notably within the framework of the National Initiative for Human Development (INDH), while hailing its commitment to women’s economic empowerment.

She also highlighted the Kingdom’s far-sighted vision in integrating this dimension of climate change into all government activities and policies, from investment in renewable energies and infrastructure reinforcement to support for cooperatives and the private sector to strengthen their adaptive capacities.

For his part, UM6P President Hicham Habti noted that the University is determined to rise to the challenge to ensure the success of initiatives aimed at mitigating the effects of climate change, particularly on the daily lives of citizens.

The program, which will be run in close collaboration with the National Initiative for Human Development, will provide cash grants ranging from $3,000 to $9,000 in climate finance to more than 1,000 cooperatives and entrepreneurs, to support their investments in equipment, raw materials and improved techniques and processes that catalyze sustainable economic development and resilience in the face of climate impacts.
