A new regular shipping line dedicated to container transport linking Tunisia, Morocco, Spain and Libya will be inaugurated next March in Sfax, according to Tunis Africa Press Agency.

The shipping line’s representative, Malek Aloui, told the agency that the administrative and logistical arrangements are almost complete. The official inauguration of this line should take place in March this year.

“In addition to competitive prices, this line is distinguished by the short duration of the services,” Malek said.

Indeed, the trips to Morocco and Spain will last respectively 4 and 6 days, with two departures per month from Sfax.

This new line is expected to boost trade between Tunisia and these three countries. It will also help to reduce the cost of transporting goods between the four countries.

Recognizing the crucial role of maritime transport in bolstering its economy and social fabric, Morocco has been putting significant emphasis on upgrading its port and logistics infrastructure over the past two decades.

This commitment is evident in its extensive network of 43 ports, 14 of which cater to international trade.

Morocco is further solidifying its maritime prowess through ongoing projects like the Nador and Dakhla ports, ensuring adherence to international standards.

These modern ports have demonstrably propelled Morocco’s maritime activity to impressive heights.

Morocco’s ports handle a staggering 195 million tons of goods, 5 million passengers, and 1 million vehicles annually.

Notably, around 9 million containers are processed each year, connecting Morocco to a vast network of 80 countries and 180 ports worldwide.

In 2023, Maritime traffic in Moroccan ports witnessed significant growth, admitting around 27,900 merchant vessels, accounting for a 16% increase from 2022.

This extensive reach has propelled Morocco to the 20th position globally in terms of maritime connectivity, with the strategic Tangier-Med port playing a pivotal role in this achievement.
