Maritime transport remained the main channel for Morocco’s foreign trade in 2025, accounting for more than two-thirds of the value of both imports and exports and an even larger share of the total weight of goods traded, according to data published by Eurostat.
Goods transported by sea were worth about 17.57 billion euros in imports and 26.02 billion euros in exports during 2025.
Maritime transport accounted for 68.8% of Morocco’s total import value, which reached about 25.52 billion euros across all modes of transport. It represented 70.6% of exports, valued at approximately 36.82 billion euros, according to the European Union’s statistics office.
The dominance of sea freight was even more pronounced by weight. Maritime shipments represented about 8.50 billion kilograms of imports, or 86.6% of the total, and 20.37 billion kilograms of exports, or 95.6%.
The figures show a maritime trade surplus of about 8.45 billion euros, based solely on the value of goods transported by sea. That accounts for more than two-thirds of Morocco’s overall trade surplus of roughly 11.3 billion euros when all transport modes are included.
Road transport ranked second by trade value, although well behind maritime shipping. Road shipments accounted for about 7.10 billion euros in imports and 8.27 billion euros in exports.
Air transport represented a much smaller share of overall trade value, with imports worth about 610 million euros and exports totaling roughly 1.94 billion euros.
The gap between transport modes becomes more pronounced when trade is measured by both value and weight. Sea freight’s share of total trade weight significantly exceeded its share of trade value, while air transport accounted for a comparatively larger share of value than weight.
That difference reflects the types of goods typically carried by each mode, with air freight often used for goods with a high value relative to their weight.
Inland waterway transport remained marginal by comparison. Imports transported by inland waterways were valued at about 624,690 euros, compared with 322,181 euros in exports.
Overall, the 2025 data highlights the central role of maritime transport in Morocco’s foreign trade, both in financial value and physical volume, with exports transported by sea significantly exceeding imports.
