Marrakech gears up for International Interfaith Dialogue Conference
Tuesday 13 June 2023 - 10:10

The International Conference on Interfaith Dialogue will take place in Marrakech from June 13–15, 2023, under the slogan “Cooperation for a Common Future”, according to the Inter-Parliamentary Union.

The United Nations Alliance of Civilizations, the Muhammadiyah Association of Scholars, and Religions for Peace will contribute to the international conference’s organization.

The event is a reflection of the Kingdom’s early past, which is rich with examples of religious tolerance and coexistence in the form of historical events and role models.

Religious leaders, representatives of civil society, and professionals will engage in constructive discourse and share best practices to address the key problems that obstruct lasting cooperation.

The conference will focus on education and science as a way to fight various forms of intolerance while also reaffirming and consolidating the shared values and principles of peace, humanity, brotherhood, and cooperation between cultures, religions, and nations.

The conference will include panel discussions, exchanges of ideas, and the definition of cooperation axes in areas like promoting peace, the integrity of the truth and the rule of law, creating a shared future, gender equality, youth participation, mutual trust and respect, solidarity, and integration.

The Kingdom of Morocco specifically fuses Arab-Islamic, Berber, and Hassani-Saharan components, as well as Andalusian, Hebrew, and Mediterranean influences.

Islam is the predominant religion in Morocco among a variety of others. The Moroccan constitution and regulations do not recognize any other religions except for Islam and Judaism, and Moroccan law does not permit conversion from Islam to another religion.

However, Christian and Jewish religious minorities have long been a part of Moroccan society.

Christians, Jews, and Baha’is collectively make up fewer than 1% of the population, according to the US Department of State’s 2022 Report on International Religious Freedom.

Jewish community leaders believe that there are 3,500 Jews in the nation, with 2,500 of them living in Casablanca.

The Moroccan Association for Human Rights reported 25,000 Christians in Morocco.

Between 7% to 15% of Moroccans are regarded as atheists.
