The High Authority for Audiovisual Communication (HACA) received a complaint from Alternatives for the Blind and Visually Impaired Organization “Badael” regarding what it deemed to be “inappropriate content” that appeared in one of the episodes of the “Fati and Salah” Ramadan series.

The Al Aoula channel aired an episode of the sitcom “Salah and Fati” that contained numerous stereotypes and socially unacceptable behaviors toward blind and visually impaired people, according to the correspondence sent to the HACA, a copy of which Hespress AR has.

It was further stated that the first prejudices promoted by the aforementioned document lies in portraying blind people as incapable and always in need of a companion to help them with everything.

The organization that filed the complaint said that this was a stereotype that was at odds with the reality that blind people in Morocco were experiencing because of the growing use of technical aids like white canes and digital communication technology.

The same source mentioned a scene that exemplifies the character of a blind person’s escort, who the episode created by distorting his image as he takes advantage of th blind person’s disability in a heinous way by pushing him to become a beggar.

The situation that was portrayed in the episode is of a person’s partner becoming their escort, which made this “more dangerous”, further explained the organization.

“Badael” emphasized that the series’ content condones stigmatization and discrimination against individuals with disabilities, which is illegal under every national and international legislation and is even punishable under Moroccan criminal law.

According to the same source, in order to prevent encouraging the younger generation to normalize such attitudes, similar content should be closely regulated and should not be shown on national networks.

The organization for the blind and visually impaired urged the HACA to immediately condemn such content.
