Morocco diesel prices top MAD 17 as economists demand transparency on fuel profits

Diesel prices in Morocco have exceeded MAD 17 per liter at some filling stations following increases introduced on November 1, prompting economists to demand greater transparency over fuel distributors’ profit margins and government taxes.

The latest adjustments raised diesel prices by between 50 centimes and MAD 1 per liter, depending on the distributor, raising concerns about higher transport costs and their impact on consumer prices.

Economist Abderrazak Tehami told Hespress that determining whether the increases were justified required detailed disclosure of purchasing costs, exchange rates, shipping, storage, taxes and distribution margins.

He said higher international prices or a weaker dirham could explain rising costs, but warned that the absence of pricing data prevented an objective assessment.

Tehami criticized government subsidies for transport operators as insufficient and urged authorities to consider reducing fuel taxes while requiring distributors to absorb part of the increases.

He also warned that a proposed five-percentage-point increase in taxation on fuel companies under the 2027 Finance Bill could ultimately be passed on to consumers.

Economist Omar Kettani described the diesel increase as disastrous and called for immediate tax reductions, arguing that lost government revenue could be offset through spending cuts across public institutions.
