The World Bank announced the provision of additional financing to Morocco in the amount of $ 250 million, equivalent to MAD 2.5 billion, to support the education sector reform.

According to a press release from the World Bank, this funding is in addition to the original program approved in 2019 at a value of $500 million.

This funding aims to support the Moroccan government in implementing a highly ambitious education reform agenda, which includes expanding quality early childhood education services, strengthening teaching practices in primary and secondary education, and strengthening management capacity and accountability to improve learning outcomes.

The International Finance Corporation stated that the program, since its inception in 2019, has contributed to raising the level of quality of early childhood education, strengthening the capabilities of the workforce in the field of teaching, and management and governance capabilities, especially at the regional level.

The additional financing aims to achieve more ambitious results for this sector, while facilitating access to education and achieving flexibility in it, in a more comprehensive and effective manner in the post-COVID-19 era.

“This additional financing supports the operationalization of the new development paradigm, specifically the Education Strategic Roadmap led by the Ministry of National Education, Primary Education and Sports,” said Jesko Henschel, Regional Director of the Maghreb and Malta Department of the World Bank.

The World Bank official stated that the roadmap “uses a three-pronged approach involving students, teachers and educational institutions to implement a reform agenda that has a tangible impact on both the learning environment and governance, and ultimately on learning outcomes.”

According to the statement, the additional funding will enable the achievement of more ambitious goals related to the assessment of learning in order to improve its outcomes. In the same regard, Louise Mingi Imfono, Senior Expert in Education at the World Bank, said: “This program will benefit 100,000 children enrolled in the first education units that will receive the quality mark, and it is also set to work to provide teachers with better professional qualifications by using Innovative educational approaches.

It is expected that 10,000 teachers will complete a training program before serving in the initial education stage, and that 10,000 of them will complete training while serving in the same stage.

In addition, 12,000 new students will enroll in the first year of the 3-year specialized Bachelor of Education course program for the academic year 2023/2024.
