Morocco may have a chance to host the 2030 World Cup finals through a potential joint bid with Spain and Portugal. The invitation to consider this option comes after Ukraine faced allegations of corruption within its football association and officials from the country were interrogated.
The Spanish and Portuguese federations had initially moved away from including Morocco in the joint bid due to FIFA’s lack of enthusiasm for joint files from different continents. However, the recent lack of objection to the joint Saudi-Egyptian-Greek file has led Spain and Portugal to reconsider their decision and move towards including Morocco in the list of nominations before the arrival of the year 2024, the deadline for placing nominations.
According to Spanish media reports, the Spanish and Portuguese federations are contemplating including Morocco in the bid, but only if they can completely disengage from Ukraine. They refuse to discuss corruption allegations and accuse Ukraine of embezzling funds meant for stadium construction, with the president of the Ukrainian federation facing up to 12 years in prison.
Morocco has attempted to secure World Cup hosting rights several times, but without success. In 2018, King Mohammed VI instructed the country to submit its candidacy for the 2030 event. Despite facing opposition from some Arab countries, Rashid Talbi Alami, the former Minister of Youth and Sports, confirmed Morocco’s dedication to ethical and disciplined competition in its candidacy file.
Argentina, Uruguay, and Paraguay, as well as Britain, have also announced their candidacy to host the 2030 World Cup. However, the Spanish and Portuguese federations have become more open to including Morocco in their joint bid, after their previous reluctance due to FIFA’s lack of interest in cross-continent joint bids.
Although no official statements have been made, it remains to be seen whether Morocco’s honest and disciplined approach will impress FIFA enough to host the 2030 World Cup.
