Belgian-Moroccan pop musician Anwar will perform in Morocco from Tangier to Agadir while promoting his second album, “Lights.”
He will be touring Tangier, Agadir, Casablanca, and Rabat. Anwar was invited to do so by The circle of Belgian Graduates (CLB-KLB), a Moroccan network that supports Belgian higher education graduates.
Anwar grew up in Brussels as the grandson of Tetouan immigrants. He recalls his music-loving father listening to Jimi Hendrix, James Brown, and Creedence Clearwater Revival as a child.
When his parents decided to relocate to Morocco, he rediscovered his homeland and culture. He dabbled in rap for a while before joining an ensemble that fuses rock and Gnaoua music, whose participation at the Essaouira Festival in 2005 remains his main turning point.
“I knew absolutely nothing about this culture but by looking into it, I learned a lot about myself,” explained Anwar in a press release.
He met the French singer Zaz, who ruled the french music industry then, and she asked him to come to Paris to open her concert after hearing him sing on stage. “Overnight, I went from little Jam sessions to Zeniths, from a few hundred people to several thousand,” exclaimed Anwar.
He released his first album in 2016 with the title “Beautiful Sunrise”, which now has over million streams on Spotify.
His second album, released in September 2022, will now be presented in Morocco, his native country.
Anwar, who has an androgynous voice, continues to produce old-fashioned love songs.
These songs caress the memories through pop, rock, and folk, with traces of blues or reggae.
Anwar will perform with the CLB at El Oumnia Porto in Tangier on February 2, the Movenpick in Casablanca on February 11, and the Medina Polizzi in Agadir on February 12.
