Scientists develop blood test that can diagnose Alzheimer's without brain scans

A group of  scientists took on the challenge of developing a blood test that can accurately diagnose Alzheimer’s disease in order to replace the currently used methods to diagnose the illness, such as lumbar punctures and brain scans, and their efforts proved effective.

Published in Brain’s medical journal, the study led by a team of multinational scientists provided clinical proof of how they developed a new antibody-based blood test, to provide Alzheimer’s patients with less evasive ways to detect the illness.

The innovative test can identify tau proteins generated from the brain, which are characteristic of Alzheimer’s disease. After examining 600 cases who consented to take part in the revolutionary discovery, the scientists discovered that their test could accurately distinguish the condition from other neurodegenerative disorders.

Additionally, measuring the amount of tau in blood has a considerable accuracy of diagnostic precision for identifying neurodegeneration in Alzheimer’s disease.

The scientist explained that trying to develop such a test was very challenging, which is why they sought to create a unique blood biomarker that specifically detects tau originating from the brain and excludes tau derived from peripheral sources, in order to avoid the difficulties associated with numerous components of blood that may be confusing.

The commonly used methods to detect the illness such as brain scans, computed topographies (CT), magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), or positron emission tomography (PET), aren’t very accessible.

The recently developed blood test could revolutionize detecting Alzheimer’s or ruling out possible symptoms of the neurodegenerative disease.
