The World Health Organization (WHO) said expects there will be more cases of monkeypox identified as surveillance expands in non-endemic countries, saying there is an urgent need to raise awareness about monkeypox.
So far 14 nations have reported outbreaks of monkeypox with over 80 confirmed cases. The latest countries to announce cases being Switzerland and Israel.
Cases have been primarily recorded among gay men and no deaths have been reported to date, WHO wrote on its latest brief on the virus.
“However, the extent of local transmission is unclear at this stage, as surveillance has been limited. There is a high likelihood of identification of further cases with unidentified chains of transmission,” WHO said.
WHO called countries to be on the alert for signals related to patients presenting with an atypical rash that progresses in sequential stages – macules, papules, vesicles, pustules, scabs, at the same stage of development over all affected areas of the body – that may be associated with fever, enlarged lymph nodes, back pain, and muscle aches.
During human monkeypox outbreaks, close physical contact with infected persons is the most significant risk factor for monkeypox virus infection.
Morocco has not recorded any cases of the newly emerging monkeypox virus, but airports, ports, and border crossing points have been put on alert, as cases neighboring Spain reach seven confirmed and 22 suspected, while France reported its first cases this week.
Health monitoring services, affiliated with the Ministry of Health are conducting periodic early detection operations of any incoming cases to limit the spread of the virus in the country, sources from the Health Ministry told Hespress.
