A total of 44 migrants drowned after their boat sank on Sunday off Boujdour in southern Morocco, reported the Spanish NGO Caminando Fronteras on Twitter.
The NGO did not specify the destination of those migrants, but boats choosing this route usually head to the Canary Islands.
According to the NGO’s founder Helena Maleno Garzón, “seven bodies were transferred to the morgue. The other victims drowned in the sea, while only 12 people survived.”
Additionally, the twelve survivors were arrested after their attempt to irregularly emigrate, added the same source.
The Spanish NGO said that it has provided authorities with the exact location of the boat, as well as called for help, noting that the rescue process took 4 hours.
