Morocco’s Head of Government Aziz Akhannouch met with the Moroccan Labor Union and the General Union of Workers representatives on February 25, to discuss freezing newly implemented sanctions for unvaccinated public sector workers.

Wage deductions for the unvaccinated population resulted in widespread outrage among the sector workers, after both the Ministry of Administrative reform and the Ministry of Justice doubled down on mandatory vaccine pass mandates, which will see the unvaccinated public officials denied access to their workplace.

Inability to access the workplace was to be treated as a “voluntarily absent from their function,” and would have been subject to wage cuts and sanctions.

Akhannouch has therefore decided to “freeze” the memos, while “continuing the sensitization campaigns for vaccination against COVID-19.”

The meeting also touched on the tumbling purchasing power of citizens, as per the unions’ memoranda containing proposals to counter the current challenges facing both public and private sector workers.

The Head of Government agreed on improving the status of health workers by changing the indicative network of doctors, pharmacists, and dentists, and having nurses benefit from promotion in rank.

The meeting resulted in the decision to increase the value of compensation for occupational hazards for the benefit of administrative staff and health technicians.

The unions and the government officials present at the meeting agreed to further “the social dialogue,” for the benefit of both public and private sector workers, in the face of rising crisis and inflation.
