The President of the National Human Rights Council (CNDH), Amina Bouayach, has underlined this Saturday the need to reflect on the means “to immunize universities against the phenomenon of violence based on gender”.
Bouayach urged, during a meeting with the National Union of Higher Education (SNESUP), “the teaching staff to look into the mechanisms for self-management of this phenomenon within universities, which represent a strategic partner of the Council in the promotion of the culture of human rights”, says a press release issued by the CNDH on Saturday.
She insisted on the importance of encouraging “the act of citizenship” to denounce these behaviors and to put in place safeguards against this scourge, in particular the treatment of reported cases in complete transparency.
The meeting held on Friday in the presence of members of the union’s executive board, was part of the follow-up to the case of sexual blackmail and harassment in some universities and higher institutes in Morocco, commonly known as the “sex for grades” scandal.
The secretary-general of SNESUP, Jamal Sebbani, highlighted the difficulty of apprehending the phenomenon, recalling some good practices recognized in this field at the international level.
Sebbani emphasized the need to initiate a deep reflection on the instruments capable of protecting students and teachers, with the objective of preserving the reputation of the university.
During this first meeting, it was agreed to continue the joint reflection on the best ways to effectively combat gender-based violence in universities.
