Morocco placed two universities in the world’s top 1,000 in the 2026 Academic Ranking of World Universities, released by ShanghaiRanking Consultancy on August 15.
Hassan II University of Casablanca and Mohammed VI Polytechnic University, or UM6P, both ranked in the 901–1,000 band. Universities within that group are listed alphabetically rather than assigned individual positions.
Hassan II University retained the band it occupied in 2024 and 2025. UM6P entered the overall ARWU ranking for the first time after previously appearing in subject-specific tables.
The universities recorded similar research scores. Each received 7.4 points for highly cited researchers. Hassan II scored 3.0 for publications in Nature and Science, compared with UM6P’s 3.5. Their indexed-publication scores were 19.5 and 19.8, respectively.
Neither university scored for alumni or faculty members winning Nobel Prizes or Fields Medals.
ARWU evaluates more than 2,500 institutions and publishes the leading 1,000. Its six indicators focus heavily on research output, citations and major academic awards.
UM6P also ranks 76–100 globally in mining and mineral engineering and 401–500 in electrical engineering and agricultural sciences.
Harvard retained first place, followed by Stanford and MIT.
