Health Minister Khalid Ait Taleb provided new details about the Covid-19 vaccine manufacturing plant, inaugurated Thursday by King Mohammed VI in Benslimane.
The Minister said the manufacturing plant will make it possible for the country to ensure self-sufficiency, and to export the vaccine to Africa.
The goal behind the creation of this factory is to fix inequalities related to the distribution of COVID-19 vaccines in the world.
The Minister specified that the factory will cover 70% of the Kingdom’s needs and over 60% of the African continent’s needs.
The project has been created with an allocated budget of £500 million and is the fruit of a public-private partnership.
The Benslimane project consists of setting up a plant for the manufacture and syringing of vaccines (anti-Covid and other vaccines), with 3 industrial lines whose combined production capacity will reach 116 million units in 2024, according to MAP.
For now, the country produces over 3 million doses locally per month. Production capacity will increase to about 5 million doses starting February 2022 and will reach over 20 million doses per month by the end of the year.
By 2025, Morocco will be able to produce over 2 billion doses of vaccine, according to the same source.
