COVID-19 cases are expected to peak by early February in Morocco, and drop in March, said the Health Minister, Khalid Ait Taleb in an interview with Reuters.

As of Tuesday, the country recorded 7,336 Covid-19 cases and 12 Covid related deaths, representing a spike compared to some 200 cases recorded earlier last month.

The Health Minister said in a statement to Reuters, “It is unlikely that we go as far as restoring a full lockdown. However, further tightening of restrictive measures depends on the evolution of the pandemic.”

Previously, the coordinator at the National Center for Emergency Operations of Public Health of the Ministry, Mouad Mrabet, forecast the outbreak to last 11 weeks, peaking during the week of January 17-23, 2022. He further stressed that everything depends on the population’s adherence to preventive measures and mechanisms, according to MAP.

In this regard, Mrabet reported a “strong weekly change” in the number of cases (almost 50%) compared to the previous week, with a reproduction rate of 1.42%.

Recently, the country has adopted some restrictive measures, including the implementation of remote work in Casablanca, following the noticeable increase in COVID-19 cases as well as the surge of the Omicron variant.

As for schools, the National Education Ministry stated that a new health protocol has been implemented, including the closure of classrooms, which will occur when there are more than 3 confirmed cases, as well as implementing remote learning for 7 days.

If more than 10 cases are recorded in different classrooms, the school must shut down and implement remote education for 7 days, in line with local authorities.

The country has also suspended the closure of borders until January 31, 2022, in a move to contain the new Omicron variant nationwide.
