National Mediator reveals Moroccans’ collective dissatisfaction with the health sector in 2020

Mohamad Benalilou, the Kingdom’s mediator, said that the complaints, requests, and inquiries received by the institution constitute an indication of “the emergence of a series of serious social demands, which may constitute a new burden on the administration and may render it powerless.”

According to the official, who made the statements while presenting the annual report of the Mediator Foundation for 2020, the emerging concerns are mostly related to the COVID-19 pandemic and other related challenges.

Despite the country’s proactive, vigilant and swift response to the emergence of the virus, Benalilou stated that the effects of the pandemic and its repercussions on rights and freedoms have contributed to the emergence of new social demands.

The annual report of the Kingdom Mediator Foundation for the year 2020 was submitted to the King, which focused on the health crisis, and the relationship of bodies attached to public administrations.

Benalilou said that out of the complaints received by the institution, 17% were directly linked to the pandemic, while the second largest part of complaints came from Moroccans residing abroad.

The complaints received by the Foundation related to restricted movement, closed borders, deliveries, and grievances related to the prevention of certain activities.

The head of the foundation insisted in his speech to the press that “the pandemic revealed the fragility of the national health system, whether at the level of poor quality of health services or lack of human resources.”

In addition, other shortcomings were revealed, such as the neglect of many illnesses experienced in 2020, as most health authorities and infrastructures devoted their full focus on combating the COVID-19 pandemic.

Benalilou stressed that the system needs a lot of justice and radical solutions, whether in terms of allocating budgets, improving health services, generalizing social protection, and eliminating major and popular concerns about national health facilities and Moroccans’ access to health care.
