Migrant workers’ number has reached nearly 170 million worldwide, representing three times more than the 53 million recorded in 2010, according to the latest estimates from the International Labor Organization (ILO) in collaboration with IOM.

According to this new report from the Global Migration Data Analysis Center (GMDAC) of the International Organization for Migration (IOM), the role of migrants in the workforce and global development is increasingly ” vital.” The UN agency estimates that migrants now represent 5% of the global workforce, up by the 2% recorded in 2010.

This report came as the world celebrates International Migrants day on December 18.

“This report is a clear reminder of migrants’ important role in the development of their communities around the world, ”said Frank Laczko, Director of IOM Global Center.

Migrants are scattered all over the world, including more than six in 10 migrants live and work in Europe (24%), ahead of North America (22%), and Arab countries (14%).

In the Arab States, over 41% of the total workforce are migrants, making it the region with the highest share of migrant workers, according to the same source.

The World Migration Report shows as well “the increasingly important key role” of migrant workers in the development of many developing countries.

According to IOM, at least USD540 billion was sent by migrants to developing countries in 2020, although declining due to the circumstances related to the COVID-19 pandemic, according to the World Bank.

In 2020, India topped other countries in terms of remittances in the world with a total of 83 billion, ahead of China (60 billion), Mexico (43 billion), the Philippines (35 billion), and Egypt (30 billion).

In some countries, including El Salvador, Lebanon, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, and Tonga, these remittances represented more than 25% of total gross domestic product (GDP) in 2020.

According to the UN, the number of people living outside their country of origin reached 281 million in 2020, compared to 221 million in 2010.

Worldwide, the share of international migrants in the total population moved from 2.8% in 2000, to 3.2% in 2010, and 3.6% in 2020.
