The National Offices of Hydrocarbons and Electricity said in a joint statement on Sunday night Morocco has secured continued supply of electricity, following a decision by Algeria to stop supplying gas to Morocco via the Maghreb Europe gas pipeline.
“Knowing the nature of Morocco’s neighborhood, and in anticipation of this decision, necessary arrangements have been taken to ensure the continuity of the country’s supply of electricity,” said the statement, without further details.
Algerian President Abdelmadjid Tebboune ordered today the state-owned energy company Sonatrach to abstain from renewing the contract for the 13.5 billion cubic-meter (bmc) gas pipeline that’s been supplying gas to Morocco and Spain for over 20 years.
The decision “will currently have little impact on the performance of the national electricity system,” said the joint statement.
The pipeline had previously covered about ten percent of Morocco’s energy demand.
