Lebanon’s electrical grid was partially restored on Sunday, following a nationwide blackout on Saturday night due to the country’s two power plants running out of fuel.

The partial restoration of power was made possible due to fuel provided by the army, the Lebanese energy ministry said.

“The army provided (…) 6,000 kiloliters of diesel, divided equally between the Deir Ammar and Zahrani power stations,” allowing a few hours of electricity per day, the ministry said in a statement.

Lebanon was plunged into total darkness on Saturday after fuel shortages forced the two power stations to shut down.

The middle eastern country has been in the midst of one of the world’s worst economic crises since the 1850s, and has been struggling with importing enough fuel for its power plants.

Most Lebanese regions barely have access to state electricity for over an hour a day, with the fuel needed to power private back-up generators also in short supply.

Lebanon has been under fire from the international community to implement urgent reforms, particularly for the state electricity provider Electricité du Liban.
