A boat carrying more than 60 migrants from sub-Saharan African countries was unable to continue its journey toward the Spanish islands after suffering an engine failure shortly after departing from Sidi Ahmed Rguibi beach in the coastal city of Sidi Ifni on Saturday morning.
According to information obtained by Hespress, the engine malfunction occurred during the initial moments of the boat’s departure, preventing it from continuing its journey.
The incident comes amid a series of irregular migration attempts from the same coastal area that have reportedly reached the Spanish islands in recent weeks.

The latest successful crossings involved two boats carrying 59 and 27 Moroccan migrants, respectively. The whereabouts of a third boat remain unknown after it departed from the same beach at around 7 a.m. on Thursday.
Following Saturday’s incident, the migrants reportedly attempted to flee toward rural areas surrounding Sidi Ifni. Members of the Royal Gendarmerie and Auxiliary Forces intervened, arrested them and handed them over to the National Security services with territorial jurisdiction.
The migrants are expected to be questioned as part of an investigation aimed at identifying those suspected of organizing the attempted crossing.
