Morocco braces for Atlantic weather disturbances and rainfall from Sunday

Morocco is expected to experience a gradual shift toward unsettled weather, with rainfall forecast across several regions from Sunday as Atlantic weather disturbances approach the country, the General Directorate of Meteorology (DGM) said.

The change is linked to shifting atmospheric pressure systems over western Europe and the Atlantic Ocean, alongside the approach of an Atlantic low-pressure system extending from the western Iberian Peninsula and surrounding areas. The system is accompanied by a cold air front in the middle and upper layers of the atmosphere.

Cloud cover is expected to increase on Sunday afternoon, bringing rain to the Souss region, the northwest and central parts of the country before extending to northern areas, the Atlas Mountains and the southeast. Relatively strong wind gusts are also forecast in Tangier and central Morocco.

Weather conditions are expected to remain unsettled on Monday, with relatively dense clouds over Tangier, the Rif Mountains, the Atlas range and its eastern slopes, the Saiss region, the phosphate plateaus, the Oulmes area and the northern and central plains. These areas could experience local rainfall or showers.

Relatively strong wind gusts are also expected in the eastern region, the Rif and Atlas mountains and central areas, accompanied by a drop in temperatures across the country.

Unsettled conditions are forecast to continue from Tuesday through the following Sunday. Passing clouds are expected over northern and central Morocco, with possible rainfall on Tuesday and further showers in several regions during the remainder of the week. The northwest could also see intermittent cloud cover bringing occasional rain.

Locally strong wind gusts are expected in several parts of the country, particularly on Wednesday. Daytime temperatures are forecast to fall noticeably before stabilizing somewhat in the following days.

Two Atlantic weather systems expected

Houcine Youabad, communications officer at the General Directorate of Meteorology, told Hespress that the expected weather disturbances are primarily linked to a low-pressure system currently affecting Portugal, whose influence is expected to extend into Morocco.

The first system is forecast to bring rainfall to several areas, particularly central Morocco, Souss and the Atlas Mountains. During the night between Sunday and Monday, it is expected to extend to northern regions, with scattered thunderstorms.

Youabad said a second low-pressure system is expected to reach Morocco on the night between Tuesday and Wednesday. It is forecast to affect a wider area, including northern and central regions, bringing thunderstorms and strong winds.

He described the developments as marking the beginning of a period of unsettled weather after the first weeks of autumn were characterized by relatively warm conditions.

However, Youabad cautioned against exaggerating the expected weather risks. The first low-pressure system is forecast to be relatively ordinary, while the second could range from moderate to strong in intensity.

He added that a more precise assessment would depend on updates to numerical weather prediction models over the coming days.

Authorities urge caution

The meteorological directorate called on residents to take precautions in areas expected to experience rainfall and relatively strong winds.

It advised people to exercise caution when traveling, particularly in areas that could receive significant rainfall, and to avoid crossing riverbeds, valleys and watercourses during precipitation.

Motorists were also urged to drive carefully, especially on exposed roads and routes likely to be affected by strong winds.
