Republican US Representative Joe Wilson called Saturday for the Polisario Front to be designated a foreign terrorist organization and for sanctions against Algeria over its purchases of Russian weapons, following Moscow’s veto of an American resolution on the Sahara at the UN Security Council.
In remarks attributed to an October 31 post on X, Wilson accused Russia of using its veto to perpetuate instability in Africa, identifying Moscow, Algeria, Iran and the Algeria-backed Polisario Front as beneficiaries of the diplomatic confrontation.
The American resolution would have renewed and restructured MINURSO while making Morocco’s autonomy initiative the sole basis for negotiations. Russia blocked the proposal despite support from 11 Council members.
Wilson’s intervention follows his earlier efforts to secure terrorist designation for Polisario. In June 2025, he introduced legislation alongside Democratic Representative Jimmy Panetta seeking action against the seperatist movement.
He reiterated the demand in September 2026 following talks with Moroccan Foreign Minister Nasser Bourita.
