With an estimated 15,000 tons of dates expected this year, Figuig’s oases are showcasing the potential of Morocco’s date palm sector amid efforts to preserve water resources, support small-scale farmers and modernize production.
Covering 2,700 hectares, the date palm sector in Figuig draws on a rich diversity of varieties, led by Assian, accounting for 19% of the total, followed by Feggous (16%), Majhoul (14%) and Khalt (12%), according to figures released by the Regional Directorate of Agriculture of the Oriental region on the sidelines of the 15th International Dates Fair (SIDATTES 2026), held in Erfoud from October 28 to November 1.
Beyond production volumes, the region’s date-growing heritage also carries a distinctive identity, as the Aziza Bouzid and Assian varieties from Figuig have been granted protected geographical indication status, recognizing their specific regional origins.
The Regional Directorate has placed water conservation and support for producers at the heart of its interventions. These include connecting oases to the Sfissif and Rekiza dams, equipping nearly 12,500 hectares with localized irrigation systems, rehabilitating around 50 kilometers of traditional “khettaras” ( underground channels used to convey water ) and planting approximately 212,550 palm trees.
The distribution of 69,700 date palm vitroplants to small-scale farmers is another measure intended to strengthen production and renew plantations, according to the same source.
Support for local producers is also expected to expand through a solidarity-based agriculture project scheduled for 2027, with an allocated budget of 17.54 million dirhams benefiting 1,845 people, 41% of whom are young people.
The project will focus on developing irrigation infrastructure in the oases, establishing a nursery for date palm vitroplants, supporting service cooperatives and providing agricultural advisory services.
Alongside public investment, the Regional Directorate is seeking to encourage private-sector involvement through the mobilization of collective land, state financial incentives and assistance with the establishment of orchards and processing facilities.
