Morocco’s Ministry of Energy Transition and Sustainable Development has launched a call for tenders covering 361 mining zones in the Tafilalet and Figuig regions, aiming to expand activity in the extractive sector.
According to SNRT News, the tender, published under Notice 1/DGMH/2026, spans nearly 13,000 square kilometers, or about 1.3 million hectares, representing roughly 22% of the area designated for mining in the region.
The ministry said the initiative introduces four key innovations designed to modernize and regulate mining development.
The first applies a multi-criteria evaluation framework that considers technical capacity, financial strength and local socio-economic impact, with particular emphasis on health and safety standards.
The second focuses on more efficient land and resource use, including water and energy, while promoting renewable energy adoption, optimized raw material use and circular economy practices.
Under the third measure, projects proposing integrated sustainable mining models will receive a bonus during evaluation. These models combine renewable energy, circular economy principles and technologies for mineral storage and valorization.
The fourth innovation aligns the tender with the Marrakech Declaration of Nov. 24, 2025, by incorporating environmental, social and governance, or ESG, criteria into project assessment.
The ministry said the zones contain significant mineral potential, including gold, silver, copper, lead, zinc and barite.
Interested operators must submit applications by 4:30 p.m. on May 15, 2026. Submissions for zones in the Drâa-Tafilaletregion are to be filed at the Errachidia regional office, while applications for zones in the Oriental region should be submitted to the Oujda office.
