Morocco’s embassy in Ramallah has begun updating lists of Moroccan citizens seeking to leave the Gaza Strip, raising the possibility of a new evacuation more than two years after the country’s last officially reported operation, sources familiar with the matter told Hespress.
Moroccans stranded in Gaza said the embassy had asked those wishing to leave to submit documents proving their Moroccan nationality, along with their Palestinian identification numbers, through a designated WhatsApp number.
An embassy employee circulated the request in a WhatsApp group bringing together Moroccan citizens trapped in the territory, according to a message reviewed by Hespress.
The message said the embassy was collecting the information as part of its continued monitoring of Moroccan citizens seeking evacuation from Gaza and to update its existing lists.
Sources suggested the move could signal preparations for another evacuation, although no operation has been officially announced or confirmed.
Hespress attempted to contact an official at the Moroccan embassy in Ramallah to determine whether evacuation arrangements were underway but received no response.
Questions over Palestinian spouses
Moroccan citizens awaiting evacuation also raised concerns about whether their Palestinian spouses would be permitted to accompany them and their children.
They questioned whether any future evacuation would follow previous arrangements under which, according to their accounts, Palestinian husbands were unable to leave alongside their Moroccan wives and children.
Morocco first evacuated 112 citizens from Gaza through the Rafah crossing in November 2023, following the outbreak of the war between Israel and Hamas.
In February 2024, the Moroccan Ministry of Foreign Affairs reported that 289 people had been evacuated in four separate operations between November 2023 and January 2024.
The last officially reported evacuation took place on January 30, 2024, through Rafah into Egypt.
