Moroccan police arrested a 22-year-old Swedish national in Tangier on Wednesday who was the subject of an international arrest warrant issued by Swedish judicial authorities over alleged involvement in an attempted murder case, authorities said.
The arrest was carried out by officers from the Tangier provincial judicial police, in coordination with Morocco’s General Directorate for Territorial Surveillance.
A check of the suspect’s identity against databases of wanted persons showed that he was internationally wanted under a red notice issued by Interpol at the request of Swedish authorities, according to security authorities.
The suspect was also allegedly caught using a false identity and forged documents. During an identity check, he presented a driver’s license containing allegedly falsified identifying information, authorities said.
The man was placed in police custody pending a judicial investigation into suspected forgery and the use of forged documents, under the supervision of the competent public prosecutor’s office.
Morocco’s Interpol National Central Bureau, based within the General Directorate of National Security, was tasked with notifying its Swedish counterpart of the arrest.
The operation forms part of Moroccan security authorities’ efforts to strengthen international police cooperation, particularly in tracking and arresting people wanted internationally in connection with cross-border crimes.
