Police in the eastern Moroccan city of Oujda have arrested a 25-year-old Dutch national who was the subject of an international arrest warrant issued by Dutch judicial authorities, Morocco’s national police said on Friday.
The suspect, who was living in Morocco illegally, was detained after a database check revealed he was wanted under an Interpol Red Notice issued at the request of the Dutch National Central Bureau in The Hague.
According to Morocco’s General Directorate of National Security (DGSN), the man is suspected of involvement in a criminal case linked to drug trafficking, unlawful detention and acts of violence allegedly committed as part of an organized crime network.
A search conducted during the arrest led to the seizure of a quantity of hashish, police said.
The suspect has been placed in police custody as part of a judicial investigation into drug possession being conducted under the supervision of the competent public prosecutor.
Moroccan authorities also tasked the National Central Bureau in Rabat, which operates under the DGSN and serves as Morocco’s Interpol office, with notifying its counterpart in the Netherlands of the arrest.
The arrest forms part of Morocco’s ongoing security cooperation with international law enforcement agencies, particularly efforts to locate and apprehend fugitives wanted in connection with transnational organized crime, the DGSN said.
