Morocco booked its place in the quarterfinals of the 2026 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) with a hard-fought 1-0 victory over Algeria on Thursday at Prince Moulay El Hassan Stadium in Rabat.
After a tightly contested match, Sanaa Mssoudy broke the deadlock in the 84th minute, finishing off a well-worked team move to hand the Atlas Lionesses all three points.
The opening stages saw both teams exchange attacks, with Morocco showing greater attacking intent as it searched for an early breakthrough. Despite creating the better chances, the hosts were unable to beat Algeria’s defense before halftime, and the teams went into the break level at 0-0.
Morocco continued to dominate possession after the restart, applying sustained pressure on the Algerian backline while limiting its opponents’ opportunities on the counterattack.
The breakthrough finally came six minutes from time when Mssoudy found space inside the penalty area and scored the only goal of the match.
Algeria pushed for an equalizer in the closing stages, but Morocco defended resolutely to preserve its lead and secure a second consecutive victory in the tournament.
The result lifts Morocco to six points at the top of Group A, guaranteeing its place in the knockout stage.
Algeria and Senegal each have three points, with Algeria ahead on goal difference, while Kenya remains bottom of the group without a point.
Morocco will conclude the group stage against Senegal, while Algeria faces Kenya in the final round of Group A fixtures.
