Morocco launched and inaugurated water projects worth more than 1 billion dirhams in Laayoune province to expand desalination capacity and secure drinking-water supplies.
The largest project, valued at 850 million dirhams, will build a direct seawater intake and pretreatment facilities for the Laayoune desalination plant in El Marsa.
Scheduled to enter service in April 2028, it is expected to serve more than 300,000 residents.
Authorities also launched an 85 million-dirham project involving a new water pipeline and pumping station to increase transfer capacity and improve supply continuity.
A fifth desalination unit was inaugurated under a separate 115 million-dirham programme that included equipment rehabilitation and new electrical infrastructure.
ONEE Director-General Tarik Hamane said the projects would strengthen production capacity, improve energy efficiency and connect production and consumption areas.
The seawater intake will use an underwater pipeline extending more than two kilometres.
