Morocco’s cement sales fell 5.3% in the first five months of 2026, reflecting weaker activity in self build housing and small construction projects despite continued demand from major infrastructure works linked to public investment programs.
Data from the Ministry of National Territory Planning and the Professional Association of Cement Manufacturers showed cumulative sales reached 5.73 million tonnes between January and May, down from 6.05 million tonnes during the same period a year earlier.
The decline accelerated in May, when cement sales dropped 20.6% year on year to 1.21 million tonnes, reversing the strong rebound recorded in April, when sales had surged by nearly 32%.
The contraction was driven mainly by weaker distribution sales, a segment closely associated with individual homebuilding and small private construction sites. Distribution volumes fell 9.6% over the five month period, while sales of prefabricated concrete products declined 12.7%.
By contrast, segments tied to large public works remained resilient. Sales of ready mixed concrete rose 4.6% to more than 1.58 million tonnes, while infrastructure related demand increased 1.9%, highlighting the continued momentum of major projects underway across the country.
The figures suggest a growing divide within Morocco’s construction sector. Large scale infrastructure and World Cup related projects continue to support demand, while private residential construction and self build activity face pressure from financing costs and household purchasing power constraints.
The building segment itself remained broadly stable, posting only a marginal decline of 0.08%, indicating that the slowdown is concentrated in specific parts of the market rather than across the entire sector.
