The Moroccan Association for Assistance to Vulnerable Migrants said Thursday that Algerian authorities handed over 56 Moroccan migrants through the Jouj Bghal border crossing, describing it as the fourth such transfer since the start of the year.
In a statement, the Morocco-based migrant assistance group said the individuals were received Thursday morning, April 30, 2026, after being held or residing irregularly in Algeria. All of those transferred were men, the group said.
The association said most of the migrants originate from cities across Morocco, including Oujda, Nador, Fes, Tangier, Rabat, and Laayoune, among others. It added that it had been working for months to assist families in providing identity documentation to help process the cases.
According to the group, the latest batch is part of a broader set of migration-related files it is tracking, including individuals detained or facing administrative procedures in Algeria. It said it is currently monitoring more than 500 cases, including over 120 individuals reportedly in the process of repatriation.
The organization also said it has recently received additional case files involving detained Moroccan nationals and continues to contact families as part of its follow-up efforts.
Families gathered near the border to receive their relatives, the association said, while emphasizing that it continues to work on locating missing persons and following up on cases across Algeria, Tunisia, and Libya.
The group praised families for their cooperation and thanked media outlets for covering migration-related issues, saying public attention is important for raising awareness of migrant rights.
It also accused human trafficking networks of exploiting vulnerable migrants, including through fraud and false promises, and called for further action against such practices.
The association urged Algerian authorities, citing international humanitarian law, to return the remains of six deceased Moroccan migrants reportedly held in morgues in western Algeria, including Tlemcen, Oran, and Béchar, so families can conduct burials.
It also expressed solidarity with human rights organizations in Tunisia and with activists facing legal pressure, calling for stronger protections for migrants and humanitarian workers across the region.
