Tangier Mayor Mounir Limouri arrived at the public prosecutor’s office today to appear in connection with an investigation into suspected electoral violations linked to the Sept. 23 parliamentary elections.
Limouri, who is also the regional leader of the Authenticity and Modernity Party (PAM), was placed in police custody Monday after being detained at Tangier’s Ibn Battuta airport upon returning from Spain.
The prosecutor ordered his detention as investigators continued examining the case.
The case centers on a polling station at Al Quds school in Tangier, where a person was detained on election day carrying a bag containing ballot papers. Videos of the incident circulated online, prompting authorities to open a judicial investigation.
Limouri’s name emerged during the investigation, which also involves several other people, including officials responsible for polling stations. He had also served as campaign director for PAM’s candidate in the Tangier-Assilah constituency.
Limouri previously denied reports that he had left Morocco to avoid questioning, saying his trip to Spain was work-related and that he would return.
