Ceuta’s assembly rejected a Vox proposal calling for a tougher Spanish response to Morocco over sovereignty claims and recent tensions, voting 17 to 4 against the motion on Tuesday.
The proposal, introduced by Vox spokesman Juan Sergio Redondo, called on Madrid to demand a public Moroccan commitment to respect Spanish sovereignty over Ceuta and Melilla, while maintaining and strengthening the military and security presence in both cities.
Vox also sought the suspension of the 1991 friendship and cooperation treaty with Morocco, a review of bilateral cooperation and Spanish pressure within the European Union to reconsider agreements and assistance involving Rabat.
On the diplomatic front, the motion proposed summoning Morocco’s ambassador to Spain and recalling the Spanish ambassador in Rabat for consultations, with the possibility of withdrawing him if the migration crisis continued.
The rejection leaves the measures without institutional backing from Ceuta’s assembly, which Spain administers and Morocco claims.
