The Strait of Hormuz remains restricted to ship traffic despite a two week ceasefire between the United States and Iran, according to Sultan Ahmed Al Jaber, who said access is still “restricted, conditioned and controlled” by Tehran.

In a statement, Al Jaber, head of Abu Dhabi National Oil Company, said Iran requires vessels to obtain permission to transit the waterway, calling the arrangement “coercion” rather than freedom of navigation.

The strait, which carries about 20 percent of global oil supply in normal conditions, has seen tanker traffic remain limited since the ceasefire took effect, according to freight analysts cited by CNBC.

Iran’s military said it would “manage and intelligently control” the passage, reinforcing uncertainty over shipping flows. Around 230 oil tankers are currently waiting to exit the Gulf, Al Jaber said, warning that continued restrictions risk tightening markets and pushing prices higher.

The disruption follows a sharp drop in tanker movements during the conflict, raising concerns over global energy supply.
