The Amal Foundation for Development, a civil society organization focused on democratic and participatory development, has called for a “fair, transparent and independent investigation” into the death of a pregnant woman and her unborn child at the provincial hospital in Tata, urging authorities to establish legal and administrative accountability.

In a statement, the organization said it received with “deep sorrow and grief” news of the woman’s death, describing the incident as a tragic event that occurred inside the Tata Provincial Hospital in recent days.

The group said the case highlights what it described as deep structural failures in the local health system, warning that such shortcomings pose a serious threat to the right to life and the right to health care, both guaranteed under Morocco’s Constitution and international human rights conventions.

According to the organization, the incident should not be viewed as an isolated or accidental case, but rather as the result of years of marginalization, inadequate medical equipment and a severe shortage of qualified health personnel. It pointed in particular to understaffing in emergency and maternity departments, as well as poor reception and care conditions for pregnant women, especially in emergency situations.

The Amal Foundation expressed its full solidarity with the victim’s family, saying the incident represents a serious failure of the health system at both the local and regional levels. It also raised questions about the quality of health services provided, adherence to medical ethics and the responsibility of authorities tasked with ensuring safe and equitable access to health care, particularly for women.

The organization said it was deeply concerned by what it described as the deteriorating state of Tata’s provincial hospital, which is meant to serve as the main health facility for the region but suffers from a critical shortage of specialist doctors, nurses and essential medical equipment. It also cited weak infrastructure and the lack of properly equipped ambulances, forcing many patients to travel long distances to Agadir, about 300 kilometers away, under difficult conditions that may endanger their lives.

The group called on the Ministry of Health and Social Protection to intervene urgently to address the situation in Tata by deploying sufficient medical staff, particularly obstetricians, anesthesiologists and emergency physicians. It also urged authorities to equip the hospital with necessary medical equipment and improve patient reception and care, especially for pregnant women.

The organization further called for the development of a regional health strategy that takes into account Tata’s geographic isolation and distance from major hospital centers, in order to ensure territorial equity in access to health care. It also urged civil society groups and media outlets to continue monitoring the case and defending the right to health as a fundamental, non-negotiable right.
