Local authorities in Mohammedia and Benslimane are holding intensive consultations on relocating the Ben Yakhlef landfill, which serves both provinces, according to information obtained by Hespress AR.
Officials are assessing potential sites for a new waste facility amid mounting concerns that the current landfill, located in Ben Yakhlef, has become a major environmental and urban blight.
The site sits close to the new Hassan II Grand Stadium under construction in Mansouria, Benslimane Province, one of the venues expected to host matches during the 2030 World Cup.
Sources say authorities are looking for suitable land that would allow the landfill to be moved far enough from the stadium to avoid any impact on the facility’s surroundings and image when Morocco hosts the tournament.
Rights groups and civic associations in Mohammedia have increasingly called for the landfill’s removal, arguing that odors from the site regularly reach residential areas in Ben Yakhlef and surrounding communities. Activists say the relocation has become more urgent as construction accelerates on the stadium.
Civil society organizations also argue that any future landfill site should be designed with stronger environmental safeguards, including measures to limit emissions and reduce air-quality impacts.
The Ben Yakhlef landfill covers about 47 hectares. It receives waste from multiple municipalities across the two provinces and includes a sorting building, a waste-burial pit, a leachate collection basin and a pond for contaminated rainwater.
The debate over its relocation reflects a broader push to address environmental concerns as Morocco prepares major infrastructure ahead of the 2030 World Cup.
