Guelmim residents have raised concerns over smoke and foul smells coming from the city’s landfill, where repeated fires have sent emissions into nearby neighborhoods.
The complaints have put the landfill at the center of local debate, with residents calling for urgent action and an assessment of the potential health and environmental impact. They say the smoke has become a daily nuisance, particularly in the morning and at night.
Guelmim’s municipal council acknowledged that fires have repeatedly broken out at the landfill in recent weeks, with their effects reaching residential areas when eastern winds blow.
In a statement, the council said it has been managing the landfill directly since February 2026, after ending its contract with the company previously responsible for the site.
The council said fires have occurred repeatedly since August and that initial inspections suggest some were deliberately started at different locations, mostly at night, by unidentified people. It said people sorting waste inside and around the landfill have made it harder to control the fires.
Municipal teams have put out several fires, but the situation worsened in September, increasing smoke emissions.
The council said a new landfill management contract is awaiting approval and should improve security, access controls, waste management and fire prevention once it takes effect.
