Health authorities in Washington state reported the first known U S death linked to the H5N5 strain of avian influenza after an elderly man with underlying conditions died following exposure to infected backyard poultry in Grays Harbor County, about 125 kilometers southwest of Seattle.
State officials said the man contracted the virus after his domestic flock came into contact with wild birds on his property. No additional human infections have been detected and there is no evidence of person to person transmission. Health departments are monitoring individuals who had direct contact with the patient as part of standard precautionary procedures.
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention said the case does not indicate an elevated public health risk.
