Morocco has taken delivery of nearly 600 M1117 Guardian armored vehicles from the United States under the Excess Defense Articles program, in what analysts describe as a significant step in the kingdom’s ongoing military modernization.

Security expert Cherkaoui Roudani said the acquisition reflects “an exceptional partnership” with Washington, noting that Morocco’s defense ties with the U.S. are anchored in a 2020–2030 roadmap covering strategic cooperation and joint exercises such as African Lion.

He said the new fleet fits into Morocco’s broader procurement drive, which also includes Apache helicopters, Abrams tanks and Patriot missile systems.

Defense analyst Berrak Chadi added that the M1117s will improve interoperability with U.S. and NATO forces, giving Morocco enhanced mobility and protection against asymmetric threats. The vehicles, designed to withstand mines and improvised explosives, are expected to strengthen rapid deployment capacity across the Sahara and Sahel.
