Tangier Med ranks fifth worldwide in port efficiency, outpacing Europe and Gulf rivals

Tangier Med, Morocco’s flagship deep-sea hub on the Strait of Gibraltar, has secured fifth place in a new global ranking of container port efficiency, as it rises as a strategic node in Mediterranean and African trade.

The recognition comes in the 2025 edition of the Container Port Performance Index (CPPI), a joint study by the World Bank and S&P Global Market Intelligence.

The report, which analyzed 403 ports using data from more than 175,000 vessel calls and 247 million container moves between 2020 and 2024, places Tangier Med just behind China’s Yangshan, Fuzhou and Dalian, and Egypt’s Port Said.

With a CPPI score of 135.8 in 2024, the Moroccan port ranks ahead of Europe’s Algeciras (20th) and even several major Chinese facilities, including Nansha, Guangzhou and Qingdao.

The achievement highlights Tangier Med’s resilience amid years of global disruption,  from the pandemic to shipping crises at the Suez and Panama canals.

Analysts credit its strong performance to rapid expansion, digitalized logistics systems and sustained investment, positioning the port as a vital alternative gateway for global carriers navigating a volatile supply chain environment.

The contrast within Morocco’s own port system is stark. Casablanca and Agadir ranked 288th and 297th respectively, dragged down by slow turnaround times and operational inefficiencies despite ongoing reforms.

By comparison, Tangier Med’s model of streamlined customs, continuous berth utilization and advanced crane deployment has become the benchmark for the kingdom.

The CPPI notes East Asian ports continue to dominate thanks to automation and integrated logistics, but it also singles out emerging ports such as Dakar, Nhava Sheva, Mersin and Posorja that have climbed the rankings through political commitment, foreign partnerships and procedural reforms.
