The local prison administration in Béni Mellal refuted claims on Monday regarding the death of an inmate due to a contagious disease, asserting that he had received adequate medical care throughout his incarceration.
In a clarification statement, the prison authorities stated that the inmate, identified as “R.A.,” was admitted to the facility suffering from chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) and had been under continuous medical supervision. During his time in custody, he underwent 69 consultations at the prison’s medical unit and 27 specialized consultations at the Béni Mellal Regional Hospital.
Given his fragile health, the inmate was transferred to the hospital’s emergency department 20 times and was hospitalized 18 times, spending a total of 219 days under medical care. His last hospitalization lasted from February 13, 2025, to March 6, 2025. Additionally, he resided at the prison’s medical ward for a cumulative period of 720 days.
Despite receiving extensive treatment, his condition deteriorated in recent months after being diagnosed with tuberculosis. He was placed on a specialized treatment protocol and was closely monitored by pulmonary disease specialists at the regional hospital.
According to the statement, the attending physician had discharged him from the hospital on March 6, 2025, after noting improvements in his condition. However, on March 7, 2025, he experienced severe chest pain and was immediately transferred to the emergency department, where he passed away upon arrival.
The prison administration emphasized that the inmate had received the necessary medical attention and dismissed allegations suggesting negligence or a lack of adequate healthcare.
