The “Climate Risk Index 2025” report by the Germanwatch organization reveals that Morocco is one of the least affected countries by climate disasters, ranking 136th globally between 1993 and 2022, and 154th in 2022, showing a reduction in its exposure to extreme weather events compared to other nations that experienced severe human and economic losses.
According to the report, Morocco recorded 42 climate-related deaths over the past three decades, with a rate of 0.017 deaths per 100,000 people.
The number of people affected by climate disasters was 103,467, and the direct economic losses amounted to $147.9 million, representing only 0.059% of the country’s GDP.
Despite Morocco’s relatively positive ranking, the report highlights that climate change remains a growing global threat.
Between 1993 and 2022, more than 765,000 lives were lost, and economic losses totaled around $4.2 trillion due to climate disasters.
Although Morocco experienced stability in 2022 with no reported deaths or significant losses from extreme weather, the report warns that future climate events could intensify, especially due to global warming.
The report also points out that Morocco faces future challenges such as water scarcity, rising temperatures, and droughts, requiring strengthened adaptation policies and preparedness for unforeseen climatic shifts.
