Local authorities in several Moroccan provinces have raised alert levels and entered a state of readiness to prevent flooding, following a weather warning forecasting heavy rainfall through the weekend, local sources said.
Provincial governors instructed local administrations, civil protection services and municipal authorities to closely monitor conditions and ensure rapid intervention before and during rainfall.
Authorities mobilized teams to clear drainage systems, open stormwater inlets and clean riverbeds to prevent the accumulation of rainwater, the sources said.
In Safi, officials directed runoff toward the sea to avoid water buildup and prevent a repeat of recent flooding incidents. Similar preventive operations were carried out in Mohammedia, where pumping equipment was deployed to maintain traffic flow in busy streets.
In Rehamna province, authorities launched preemptive campaigns to clean drainage channels and riverbeds, while mobilizing machinery and equipment to address flood risks.
Local services were also activated Saturday in Benguerir to drain water that had accumulated in several neighborhoods.
Civil society representatives said the preventive measures have reduced flood risks in vulnerable areas, particularly where flood protection projects have been completed in recent years.
Officials said monitoring and interventions will continue as long as weather conditions remain unstable.
