A U.S. military delegation from the embassy in Rabat met with leaders of the United Nations Mission for the Referendum in Western Sahara (MINURSO) on Wednesday, addressing peacekeeping challenges in the region.
The delegation, which included senior military officials, held talks with Alexander Ivanko, head of MINURSO and UN Secretary-General’s representative in Western Sahara. They also met with General Fakhar Al-Ihsan, commander of the mission’s military forces, to discuss issues related to maintaining stability, according to a UN source who spoke on condition of anonymity.
The group later traveled by UN aircraft to Mahbes, a border area recently affected by attacks and hostilities from the Polisario Front following its unilateral withdrawal from the ceasefire agreement.
The delegation included Spoon Sharon Esmerald, Dustin Roark Tanen, Lieutenant Fisher Jr. Gregory Car, and Aleksander Thomas Kask. Their visit aimed to bolster cooperation with MINURSO and assess the situation on the ground as part of broader international efforts to support peacekeeping and regional stability.
U.S. Embassy delegations in Rabat have consistently visited the UN mission in Laayoune to back its initiatives for peace and security. These efforts reflect the United States’ commitment to supporting international missions in resolving conflicts and maintaining stability in the region.
