The United Nations Mission for the Referendum in the Sahara (MINURSO) held a ceremony in Laayoune to welcome Major General Jawad Ahmad as its new Force Commander, with military and civilian personnel from the mission in attendance.
The ceremony was attended by Ron Misti Kamwendo, chief of the mission’s support division, and Capt. Asa D. Kim, chief of staff of the military force, along with other MINURSO personnel.
The event formally marked Ahmad’s assumption of responsibility for the mission’s military component.
In remarks during the ceremony, the two U.N. officials highlighted the role of MINURSO’s military component in supporting the mission’s mandate and referred to Ahmad’s professional experience as relevant to his new responsibilities.
Ahmad said he was honored to take up the position and reaffirmed his commitment to supporting peace in accordance with the principles of the U.N. Charter.
The new Force Commander also said he planned to visit MINURSO team sites across the mission’s area of operations and hold meetings with personnel to gain a deeper understanding of their work and responsibilities.
The visits are also intended to provide a first-hand assessment of the challenges facing the mission’s military component on the ground.
Ahmad succeeds the previous Force Commander and will oversee MINURSO’s military component as it carries out tasks in support of the mission’s mandate in the Moroccan Sahara.
