Société Marocaine des Tabacs (SMT) plans to invest about 300 million dirhams in its Ain Harrouda factory near Mohammedia to manufacture cigarettes exclusively for the U.S. market, sources familiar with the project said.
The investment would give the plant, which has primarily supplied Moroccan consumers, a larger export role within the production network of its British owner, Imperial Brands.
The sources linked the project to Imperial Brands’ Voyager program, an initiative to reorganize manufacturing capacity and supply arrangements across international markets.
Under the plan, part of the factory’s existing capacity would be allocated to U.S.-bound production through a partnership with Commonwealth Brands Morocco. The Moroccan entity was established as an extension of Commonwealth Brands, an American business within the Imperial Brands group, the sources said.
Investment is expected to cover equipment upgrades and adjustments to production lines to meet the specifications of products destined for the United States.
The arrangement would connect manufacturing in Ain Harrouda with the group’s American business, giving the Moroccan plant an additional function beyond serving its domestic market.
According to the sources, the factory’s selection reflects a broader reassignment of production responsibilities among Imperial Brands facilities, using existing industrial capacity to supply overseas markets.
