UNESCO’s International Oceanographic Commission has questioned delays in Morocco’s “Tsunami Readiness” program, which was meant to declare El Jadida a “Tsunami-Safe City,” sources told Hespress.
The city was expected to complete the project earlier this year, following Alexandria’s successful completion.
The delay is due to two warning sirens, donated by UNESCO and still stuck in administrative procedures at Mohammed V International Airport.
Chouaib Doukkali University, overseeing the project, has been waiting for months as the shipping company demands payment for storage fees, which the university cannot afford due to budget constraints for 2024.
While UNESCO initially set September as the deadline, the project is now at risk of missing the final December extension.
This has raised concerns among Moroccan officials, especially as Alexandria completed its program and received its “Tsunami-Safe City” certification months ago.
