Morocco ranks as the 36th largest wine producer in the world, making it the second-largest wine producer in Africa, after South Africa.

Of its total production, the country exports only 1.45%, with the rest reserved for local consumption.

A historic wine producer dating back to Roman times, Morocco, once a major exporter to Europe, where its wines were used to blend bottled wines, has in recent decades transformed into a local producer focused on bottling wine for domestic markets.

With an average per capita wine consumption of 2.2 liters, Morocco produces red, white, rosé, and gris wines—similar to the gris wines produced in the southeastern regions of France (Languedoc and Provence).

The country boasts several Controlled Designations of Origin (AOC), including Les Coteaux de l’Atlas and Les Côtes de Rommani.

Additionally, Morocco has 14 Guaranteed Designations of Origin (AOG), which include Berkane, Angad, Zerhoun, Beni M’tir, Guerrouane, Zemmour, Gharb, Chellah, Beni Sadden, Saiss, Zaër, Sahel, Zenata, and Doukkala.

As reported by the Spanish newspaper La Razón, “The sun, the influence of the Atlantic winds, and its mountains create the perfect conditions for producing high-quality wines in Morocco.” The article also notes that Morocco’s wine production dates back to Phoenician and Roman times, with the Romans expanding wine cultivation in the Volubilis region, which today remains the largest wine-growing area near the city of Meknès.

According to the International Organisation of Vine and Wine (OIV), Morocco produces about 40 million bottles annually, from its 42,216 hectares of vineyards, based on 2022 data.

Morocco imports the equivalent of half its production, and over 98% of the wine produced is consumed domestically.
